Rice And Rocks by Sandra L. Richards is about a boy named Giovanni who’s embarrassed about Sundays night dinner. Giovanni has friends coming over, he doesn’t like Rice and Rocks a.k.a. rice and beans and  worries what his friends will think, he worries they might find it weird. What Giovanni doesn’t realize that rice and beans is enjoyed by many cultures, race, and creeds. As it is a staple traditional Jamaican dish, many enjoy rice and beans on a weekly to daily basis. To help Giovanni understand, and to help him understand the importance of racial and various ethnic, cultural backgrounds and the foods, Giovanni’s  favorite aunt and his pet parrot Jasper go on a magical adventure visiting people of different backgrounds who eat rice and rocks or rice and beans.

Rice And Rocks by Sandra L. Richards is a stunningly illustrated 32pg.picture book. It’s easy for a kid to feel insecure about their own family traditions especially when your young and you don’t see other kids eating the same foods, or never heard of it. I know I love rice and beans and have since when I was little and like Giovanni I was unsure what my friends may think, would they laugh, make fun, not like it, why did we eat it but not other people, so many questions. As Giovanni goes on the magical adventure with his aunt and parrot, visiting so many different places like Puerto Rico, New Orleans, Japan, Jamaica, showing diversity, various cultures, with various traditions, it’s ok to love something, enjoy it. There are many people around the world and traditions are important and Giovanni comes to find himself understanding that.

Understanding the important of traditions and your roots, who you are, it’s nothing ever to be embarrassed of. It’s something to be proud. In a few short 32pgs.you get to learn the value of traditions in your home and around the world and no matter differently we may all be if look just a little closer you will be AMAZED on how somethings are universal.
This is a must read for children, anyone who just wants a reminder. It’s also beautifully illustrated and the different cultures and traditions are beautifully represented.

To Rocks and Rice and many more!
